How to free up storage on iPhone without losing the photos you love

Updated October 2026 · 5 min read

"iPhone Storage Full" usually means one thing: photos and videos. A single minute of 4K video can take hundreds of megabytes. Here's a quick plan that frees the most space for the least effort.

1. Check what's using space

Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and wait for the bar to load. In most cases Photos is at or near the top. The list below shows apps sorted by size, with suggestions such as offloading apps you don't use.

2. Delete large videos first

Videos are the biggest win. Photos doesn't sort videos by size, so use Emberoll's Large Videos, which lists them biggest first. See how to find large videos.

3. Clear duplicates and similar shots

Merge exact copies in Photos → Utilities → Duplicates. For bursts and near-identical shots, use Emberoll's Similar category, which keeps the best photo of each group. See our duplicate photos guide.

4. Remove old screenshots

Screenshots are small one by one, but most people have hundreds or thousands. Here's how to delete them in bulk.

5. Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage

If you use iCloud Photos, go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos and choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Full-resolution originals stay in iCloud, and your iPhone keeps smaller versions when space runs low. This needs enough iCloud storage for your library.

6. Empty Recently Deleted

Nothing you delete frees space until it leaves Recently Deleted, which takes 30 days. See how to empty or recover Recently Deleted.

Make it a habit

A few minutes a week keeps storage from filling up again. Emberoll's 2-minute cleanup shows your largest unreviewed files first, so even a short session frees real space.

Do it in two minutes with Emberoll
